The Dreamcast - The Greatest Console Ever! Empty
PostSubject: The Dreamcast - The Greatest Console Ever!   The Dreamcast - The Greatest Console Ever! Icon_minitimeFri Nov 12, 2010 6:27 am

IGN did a video of the history of the Dreamcast last September (it's 10th anniversary). The video is below. I think the Dreamcast was way ahead of its time and it was funny that back when it came out and introduced online gaming to consoles that PC gamers slammed it for having online gaming saying it would never work on consoles! Fast forward to now and what's the biggest thing for game consoles? ONLINE GAMING! And also, EA were the big developer who snubbed the Dreamcast. It's funny how just recently they had to cancel NBA Elite 11, bit of money lost there hey! And it is also funny how the best basketball video game series started on the Dreamcast due to the lack of EA support! Go 2K!

It would of lasted longer if it was the greatest ever. Id toss up between NES, N64, PS2 or the 360.

No way, Vic, the Dreamcast was the greatest console of all time! (for its time, anyway. if it was out now, it would whimmer in comparison to the 360 or PS3). But yeah, Craig, you are totally right, it was way ahead of its time and is probably the most important thing to effect what console gaming is today. Im still waiting for another console to come out with some new memory card that allows you to play mini-games and progress real-games stats and missions with on the go!

Longevity isn't the only factor in measuring success and anyway, the Dreamcast is still very much around as games are actually still being made for it. Hardcore gamers that are old enough to appreciate the good old days with Sega and many others still to this day claim that the Dreamcast was the most underrated console of all time and the reasons for this is that it was way ahead of its time and its rivals for quality and innovation and was only not "successful" in a commercial sense due to the Saturn's failure and the dent that that had put in Sega's reputation and as a consequence the lack of EA's support. To this day Soul Calibur on the Dreamcast is one of the most highest rated games ever. Also, the Dreamcast had a web browser as well which was pretty much as good as the one the PS3 has! What should of happened is Microsoft should have bought Sega and used their talent to produce a MS/Sega machine similar to the Xbox and 360 but better which would have smashed anything that Sony and Nintendo could produce. The Wii is "commercially successful" but at the end of the day is a crap machine.

And also, quality doesn't always determine success either as HDDVD was far better than Blu-ray, but some under the table stuff got Blu-ray the movie studios support and subsequently led to the demise of HDDVD. It took Blu-ray some time to catch up to the technology that Toshiba had perfected for HDDVD at its launch.

Just my take on it anyway.

I am going to dispute that fact with you. The Wii is not a crap machine, what it does it does very well. The reason that a lot of people give the Wii a hard time is because a) all of the shovelware that is infexting the market and b) because your mum plays one (not your mum specifically Craig I have no idea whether she plays or not but you guys get what I am trying to say) and if your mum plays it, just how cool can it be? Some of my greatest moments of gaming this gen have been on the Wii, granted they have almost all been from 1st party Nintendo titles, but how about a little bit of credit where it is due.

Perhaps I was a little harsh when I said it was a "crap" machine, but I actually have to disagree a bit on what you said there Michael. What Nintendo advertised about what the Wii could do prior to release it failed in. The motion control is very poor in a LOT of titles on the Wii including the Wii Sports games, and I am not just talking about the first Wii Sports that is bundled with it, although that was even very poor as a "Tech Title". Even with the addition of the Wii Motion plus which was only introduced because Nintendo didn't live up to the promise of how good the motion tech would be didn't do a lot to enhance the initial tech.

Yes I agree there is some fun to be had on the Wii, but I still think for the quality (or lack thereof) of the software the Wii has and the low quality of the hardware, it is a very over hyped and over priced gaming system. I know the Wii isn't a HD console, but even non-HD consoles like the Dreamcast crap all over it. And the Dreamcast actually had non-typical controller games which are only being brought to the Wii now.

Although I am not a fan of Nintendo and never will be, I do agree that the Wii was a good move by Nintendo and even a good thing for MS and Sony as it forced their hand to release motion controls for their respective systems. And yes I can admit that one thing Nintendo do right is their first party titles, but there is a reason the Wii has the worst game attach rate and a reason why the Wii has the least amount of games reviewed across Magazines, websites etc of all 3 current gaming consoles.

Blu-Ray was successful because that was the format that Porn went to! Its a histocial fact that which ever new format Porn companies choose, becomes victorious. Look at Betamax and VCR. Betamax was a much better piece piece of hardware, but porn was only released on VCR, so Betamax went the way of the dodo.

Actually John, Porn was with HDDVD, it was Sony paying massive amounts to Universal studios who were at that time siding with HDDVD that was the straw that broke HDDVD's back as then the rest of the studios followed and HDDVD was doomed.

Again, popularity has absolutely nothing to do with quality. Its the same for both hardware and software. Call fo Duty is the most popular online game, yet Halo, Battlefield and Killzone all have much better communities and online mechaincs.

The Dreamcast was actually refused to be carried and sold by MANY Amercian stores due to the fact that the industry feared a lack of Support by SEGA, just as they lacked support on the Mastersystem, Megadrive and many other of thier consoles. This fear of lacking support was the main reason for the failure of the console becuase third-party companies (a lot of them anyway) refused to develop games becuase they were afraid the console would fail due to the support topic.

I never had one when they first released, but I got one years after to play some of the games like Crazy Taxi and Sonic, and they are amazing. Much better than my old PS2 at the time and to some xtene even the Xbox apart from graphics.

Simone is right there, Sega were known to lack support of their own consoles post-release and this is why many companies refused to help support them.

But another, less known, reason for the consoles failure was piracy. To those who think downloading games and others things is harmless, The Dreamcast is yet another perfect example of how wrong you are. Back in the consoles hey-day, there was these things called Boot CD's, which greatly helped anyone and everyone pirate discs. The Dreamcast didnt use CD-ROMs, they used a very rare disc called a GD-ROM. Its very simialr, but cannot be played in a CD-ROM drive. The cheap, easy and very popular Boot discs allowed players to play burnt games, and although PC's couldnt read the Dreamcast games, due to the Dreamcasts highly-technical nature, it was easily able to be linked directly to your PC and through a series of simple steps, you could directly burn Dreamcast GD-ROM games to a CD-ROM which the Dreamcast was able to read after the use of the aforementioned Boot discs.

Piracy killed the worlds best console, which had it all but anti-dickhead measures. Even though the console sold well, its games didnt becuase of this. Games dont sell well - companies stop making them. Companies stop making games - console doesnt get them. Console doesnt get games - console dies. It still had something like 800 official games, but only shitty little small comanies with little experince or creativity made many.
